7 Steps to Stop Clogged Milk Ducts: How do you keep them flowing freely?

7 Steps to Stop Clogged Milk Ducts: How do you keep them flowing freely?

As a mother of 7 children, I have experienced the delight of breastfeeding each and every one of them for at least a year.   I loved my time breastfeeding.  The connection I made with my babies while they looked up into my eyes was really amazing.  I highly recommend breastfeeding for multiple reasons, but that is for another blog!

Some parts of breastfeeding were not so wonderful and
I had ups and downs with milk flow.   I was prone to clogged milk ducts and I got mastitis several times.  The speed which mastitis can set in is a little frightening.  Through my many experiences, I figured out that catching those clogs early was key.  I was able to  manage it all myself naturally, and I did!

If you would like to try a natural approach to maintaining free flowing breast milk, read on.     I have come up with a list of the best ways I used to support myself to keep things flowing!

1. Drink!  Drink!  Drink!  Water is essential!  Nursing moms need to be drinking more than usual to keep up with the demands of their infant.   If you are dehydrated, milk production can go down, flow can be reduced in some areas, you can experience fogginess and fatigue (more than usual), and you are more likely to get sick.   You must get enough water! 1/2 your bodyweight in ounces is a normal amount of water, so you should be drinking more than that.

2.  Drink pineapple juice!   I thought this was weird when I first heard it!   For some reason, the acid in pineapple helps keeps the milk flowing freely!  I always kept a large jug of pineapple juice on hand while breastfeeding.  That way, immediately upon detecting a clogged duct, I could start drinking it.  I would drink a whole jug the first day.

3.  Essential Oils are wonderful for the comfort and relief they bring!  My favorite recipe is: 2 drops  clove, 10 drops  tangerine, 10 drops  lavender, 1½ tsp  V-6 Oil or Olive Oil.  Mix and massage on the breasts and under the armpits twice daily.  (I usually rub it in immediately after the baby is done nursing – it will not cause harm to the baby as long as they are pure unadulterated oils, but applying after feeding gives a little extra time for it to soak in.  In case of skin irritation – use more V-6 or olive oil)  I love how this keeps the milk flowing clog free!  To step up milk production, try  fennel, or  fenugreek tea.

4. Heat!  You can apply a hot compress before, during and after breastfeeding.  It is soothing, and seems to help keep the milk flowing freely.

5.  Massage –  Wash your hands first.  Massage in a clockwise motion and towards the nipple.  Also massage any lumps, even though this is painful, it helps!  This can be done with the heat and/or oils before, during and after breastfeeding.  It is great to do this in the shower, too.  Make sure to be ready for spilt milk.

6.  Nurse/ pump!   This is almost a given, but drain all the milk you can, any way you can!  This is especially important if your baby isn’t nursing well for some reason (teething, illness).

7.  Immune System Weed & Feed!  This is not for your lawn – this is for your gut!   Weed in the morning:   Inner Defense is powerful for the immune system, and provides your body with a great defense!  (Be sure to take it with food as it is very strong.)  Feed in the evening:    Life 9 Probiotic is the best I have ever tried – I use it every day – it re-colonizes the flora in your intestines, which strengthens your immune system, and gives your body what it needs to thrive!  I have found great success with these.

Seasonal Tips for Stress-Free Holidays

Seasonal Tips for Stress-Free Holidays
If you have ever sat thinking about upcoming events or seasons and have felt the stress rising even before the stress comes, this is for you!!

Don't give up before the season starts!
Try these tips to lessen stress and feel more peace!

Prepare Ahead of Time

Write out your budget and stick to it.  This will alleviate stress in the moment when you are trying to make decisions.
Prioritize all holiday activities.  What events most important to you?  Make sure you schedule these first.  It is ok not to go to ALL the things.  Having your priorities straight and even reducing the number of activities will do a lot to reduce your stress.
Schedule time to relax.  In a season with little down time, MAKE the time!  Your body and mind will be able to take the break they need to let go of stress.
Schedule immediate family time to laugh and play.  One of the best remedies for stress is laughing with family. In the end, your family is the most important priority.
Make lists of people for gifts & cards, menus, supplies, etc.  Get all your ducks in a row.  Make all your lists so you remember everything you need in each scenario.  Less stress, more peace!

Keep Healthy Habits

Make healthy food choices.  Even with all the sugary treats and feasting indulgences, you can make good choices and limit consumption of unhealthy options.  When bringing food to an event, make a healthy option.   Unhealthy food choices stress our bodies out making us more likely to get sick, so making the best choices will remove that stressor.
Keep exercising.  This may not be the time to start a new regimen, but continue your exercise routine and keep moving.  Exercise is known to alleviate stress and help us feel good.
Keep spiritual practices.  Reading scripture, prayer, and mediation are all known to lower stress levels.   Keep going with these habits to stay centered and at peace.
Keep using essential oils.  There are so many essential oils that help reduce stress levels and help us relax. Some of my favorites are  Lavender Stress Away, and  Peace & Calming.  Others help with the feelings of the season like  Gratitude Christmas SpiritFrankincense, Myrrh, Joy Cinnamon Bark, and  Orange

Embrace Emotions & Family

Know that it is ok to feel a range of feelings during the holidays.  With missing loved ones, past trauma, current situations that are not ideal, or a myriad of other reasons, we may feel other emotions besides gratitude, peace, love, and joy.  Accept these emotions, acknowledge them, as this will lower the stress we feel at feeling the "wrong" emotions at this time.  However, do your best not to dwell in the lower frequency emotions.
Focus on Gratitude and Love.  You can find joy and happiness in the little things.  Keeping an attitude that focuses on the good relieves stress and raises our frequency, which helps us feel good.
Gracefully navigate family situations with a focus on the good.  Family is wonderful!  But not every minute is wonderful.  Remembering to focus on long term relationships, forgiveness and love goes a long way to reducing stress.
Keep family connections strong, whether in person or via phone or video chats.  Loving family relationships help alleviate stress in many ways.

The best way to set sustainable goals

The best way to set sustainable goals
As a Certified Nutritarian Coach, one of the first things I do with my clients is to set reasonable health goals. Sometimes I find that my clients are so excited to move forward that they want to set a lot of big goals right at first, however, this is not usually successful.

As a society, we joke about the failure of “New Year’s Resolutions.” So many of us set big goals at the beginning of the year and then give up after two weeks because we set either too many goals at once or goals that were unrealistic. This becomes overwhelming and unsustainable without major support. Setting small attainable goals with weekly accountability is the key to success.

After setting your overarching long term goal:
1. Get your mindset in a good place. (Believing you can do something is the first step.)
2. Set a goal that is small enough to complete in one week. (You can do anything for a short time.)
3. Set a goal that is personally attainable. (Be honest with yourself. If 10 minutes of exercise is all you can do per day the first week, then great!)
4. Get your family on board. (Although not absolutely necessary, family support really helps with success.)
5. Have a coach or accountability partner for a weekly check in. (Having someone to talk to who keeps you on track helps motivate you when it gets tough.)
6. Keep track on paper, in a journal, or on a chart. (This only takes a few minutes, but makes a huge difference in success.)
7. Set a small reward that does not undermine the goal. (i.e. if the goal is to cut refined sugars, a piece of candy is not a good reward.)
8. When setbacks happen, recommit. (Give yourself grace and keep going! One slip up does not equal failure.)

By setting a small goal each week, it is much easier to attain your long term goal one step at a time. Even with setbacks, you can get back on track easily. It is better to set small goals that are achievable and have success than to be defeated by big goals that were unrealistic. Making changes in your health can be difficult, but it is possible, and I have seen amazing transformations with just one change per week as my clients have moved to healthier lifestyles that result in more energy, more clarity of thought, less health issues, less medication, and an overall feeling of well-being.

What areas should I set goals in?  Find out here.

Mandates for our children!

The last 2 weeks have been a crazy as parents all over the state of California reeled from the announcement of Covid-19 vaccination mandates for their children.  With around half of the parents choosing not to inject themselves, there are even more that are unwilling to subject their children to this experiment.  In fact, all over the state, parents are organizing and holding"sit out" days by pulling their kids out in protest of this mandate. This has gone too far, and the sleeping momma and poppa bears are awake!  We won't stand for it anymore.  The state has no right to force our kids to participate in an experiment!

The fact that the FDA is starting to approve these so-called vaccines gives little comfort to parents as many of the drugs the FDA has approved in the past have been pulled years after many people in our country have been injured or killed.  We already know these fast tracked vaccines cause harm.  See the CDC run Vaccine Adverse Events Reporting system information for details on the problems with the current vaccines.  It is eye opening to read how many people have already died or have been permanently harmed, and the number of children is alarming!

"Breakthrough" cases prove the vaccine does not work.  The manufacturers do not claim that it prevents the spread of Covid-19, and they do not claim that it stops the person vaccinated from contracting it.  So what is the point?  The manufacturers themselves only claim to lesson the symptoms.  The media's claims of the vaccine helping to protect others is a complete lie.   Leaving all that aside, however, children are at much less risk of contracting or spreading Covid-19, and the studies are already coming out that children are at more risk of being harmed by the vaccine than the illness itself.   The risk vs. benefit ratio is totally backwards.

With the mandates coming within the next year, everyone must be prepared.   While currently law allows for exemptions, Many are sure the current legislators will be quickly attempting to remove that right.  So what will parents do? Are parents willing to do what it takes to stand up for their children?  Are they willing to use their constitutional rights as citizens to petition the government for redress?  Are they willing to call, write, and visit their legislators and make their voices heard in a big way?

What will you do?
