Have you ever flipped over your laundry detergent bottle and tried to make sense of the ingredient list? If you have, you’re definitely not alone! As holistic moms, we care deeply about what goes on and around our families — and laundry detergent is something we use all the time. So today, let’s unpack two of the most common toxic ingredients found in laundry detergents: NPEs and sulfates — and why you might want to avoid them.

NPEs – What Are They and Why Should We Care?
NPE stands for nonylphenol ethoxylates, a group of chemicals used as surfactants to help soften water and break down dirt. Sounds helpful, right? But here’s the catch — when NPEs break down, they turn into nonylphenols, which are toxic to both humans and the environment. 😬
Studies have shown that these compounds can be absorbed through the skin as you wear clothes or ingested via contaminated water. Several countries have restricted or banned their use in household products because NPEs are classified as endocrine (hormone) disruptors. This means they can interfere with hormone function in both humans and animals. In aquatic environments, they have been shown to feminize male fish, affecting reproduction and leading to population declines. Can you imagine what it does to us?  This highlights how our everyday choices can have a ripple effect far beyond our homes.

Sulfates – The Sudsy Trouble-Makers
Sulfates (like sodium lauryl sulfate or sodium laureth sulfate) are the ingredients responsible for those foamy suds we associate with "clean." But behind the bubbles, they can be harsh on sensitive skin, especially when paired with other chemicals like phthalates or artificial fragrances.
Over time, sulfates can strip away your skin and hair’s natural oils (the protective barrier), leaving them vulnerable to environmental toxins, bacteria, and allergens, and dry, itchy, and irritated with increased sensitivity, redness, and even eczema flare-ups in those who are prone to skin conditions.. For kids or anyone with skin sensitivities, this can be especially problematic.

While using products with NPEs or sulfates once in a while might not seem like a big deal, long-term exposure can take a toll on your family’s health — and our planet. As mindful mamas, we have the power to read labels, make swaps, and choose safer options for our homes.
It’s not about perfection — it’s about progress toward a healthier, toxin-free life.
