DIY Aromatherapy Playdough: A Fun and Calming Activity for Moms and Kids

Here’s how you can make your own at home with a few ingredients you likely already have in your kitchen.

DIY Aromatherapy Playdough Recipe

Ingredients:

Instructions:
  1. Mix the Dry Ingredients: In a medium-sized saucepan, combine the flour, salt, and cream of tartar. Mix well.
  2. Add the Wet Ingredients: Stir in the water and oil. If you’d like to color your playdough, add a few drops of food coloring at this stage.
  3. Cook the Dough: Place the saucepan over medium heat. Stir constantly until the mixture forms a thick ball of dough (about 2–3 minutes). Remove from heat.
  4. Cool and Knead: Allow the dough to cool for a few minutes. Then, knead it on a clean surface until it’s smooth.
  5. Add Essential Oils: Once the dough is slightly cool, add 5–10 drops of your chosen essential oil(s). Knead thoroughly to evenly distribute the scent.

Storage:
Keep your aromatherapy playdough in an airtight container or zip-top bag. It will last for several weeks when stored properly. While not necessary, I like to keep mine in the fridge.

How to Use Aromatherapy Playdough

  • For Kids: Let them squish, mold, and create freely while breathing in the calming scents.
  • For Moms: Use it as a mindfulness tool—knead and shape the dough while taking slow, deep breaths to relax.
