As holistic moms, we’re always looking for ways to reduce toxins in our homes. Today we’ll unpack 5 more common toxic ingredients found in laundry detergent.

6. 1,4 diaoxane - This is known to cause cancer and yet it is still allowed.  It is often not on the label, but other ingredients, like sulfates, are contaminated with it. It can also cause skin, eye, and lung irritation as well.

7. Sodium Hypochlorite - Sodium hypochlorite is a type of bleach often used in conventional laundry detergent due to its ability to remove stains from clothing quickly and easily. However, it can be extremely harsh on the skin and eyes if not handled properly. It has also been linked to lung damage after long-term exposure at high levels.

8. EDTA (Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid) is an ingredient used as a preservative in some cleaning products like laundry detergent. It has been linked to kidney damage and cancer risk when inhaled over long periods of time - so it's best avoided if possible! To steer clear of EDTA in your detergent look for labels that say “non-toxic” or “EDTA free".

9. Phosphates are another common toxin found in laundry detergents and fabric softeners. Phosphates act as water softeners which help get rid of dirt and stains more easily during the wash cycle - but they also contribute to harmful algal blooms when they enter waterways through wastewater runoff. As a result, many states have passed laws banning phosphate detergents since they can cause serious environmental damage. Look for detergents labeled “phosphate free” to be sure that yours is safe for both the environment and your family.

10. NPE (nonylphenol ethoxylates) are surfactants used to soften water, which helps make it easier for detergents to dissolve. Unfortunately, NPEs can be broken down into nonylphenols that are hazardous to humans and the environment. In fact, studies have shown that NPEs can be absorbed through skin contact or by ingesting contaminated water. For these reasons, many governments are starting to regulate the use of NPEs in consumer products like laundry detergents.

Long-term exposure to toxic ingredients can lead to adverse effects over time. That’s why it’s important for holistic moms to read labels carefully and choose products that don’t contain these potentially harmful ingredients. By being mindful of the ingredients you use in your home, you can make sure your family is living a healthy life without toxins!
